High-speed cutting tool materials mainly include cemented carbide, coated tools, cermets, ceramics, cubic boron nitride and diamond tools.


Coated tools are widely used in high-speed milling, and the substrates are high-speed steel, cemented carbide and ceramics, but cemented carbide is the main one. TiAlN-coated cemented carbide with physical vapor deposition has good cutting performance in high-speed milling. The recently developed TiN/AIN nano-coated tools are also suitable for high-speed cutting.


Cermets mainly include TiC-based cermets with high wear resistance (TiC+NiorMo), high-toughness TiC-based cermets (TiC+TaC+WC+Co) reinforced TiCN-based cermets (TiCN+NbC), compared with hard cermets. The alloy improves the high temperature performance of the tool and is suitable for high speed machining of alloy steel and cast iron.
